The Moses Family 2007 March 4

March 4, 2007

Felix is doing great with reading. He still goes twice a week to Ariel, the educational therapist, and loves it. He's pretty solid on 20 letters at this point, and does a good job of sounding out small words that contains those letters. We also do a lot of homework. Each letter has taken a tremendous amount of effort and repetition to learn: we're so glad we're doing this rather than waiting for kindergarden.

It's clear that Milo's got no problems with reading. He's naming letters all over the place, and making all the right hand motions and making the actual isolated sound the letter represents. We're hoping for the sake of Felix's ego that Felix gets solid with reading before his two-year-old brother starts reading The Cat In The Hat to him.

It's been really interesting to see Felix's challenge with reading because in every other respect he's a very, very smart cookie. He was the only 4 year old that we knew who we could have a good discussion of gravity with, or how waves form. Very often he points out small logical inconsistencies in stories or pictures that we'd never thought about. Who would have thought the ABC's would be such a challenge? But they are, and he's taking on the challenge and succeeding.
