This morning, the baby elephant saga took a new turn. Felix declared that HE was the elephant's mom, and he carried it under his T-shirt for hours. When a woman at the store complimented him on his cute elephant, he corrected her, saying "Bébé!" in a can't-you-see-it's-my-baby voice.

At lunch time, he finally agreed to take out his baby (too much yogurt was getting dropped on its face). He carefuly put the elephant in a sieve, wrapped in a napkin, on the floor. Several times during lunch, Felix excused himself from the table, claiming that his baby was crying. He would gently pet it for a minute or two. I asked him why his baby was crying, and he just sort of shrugged, as if to say "well, you know, that's what babies do".

For a 2-year old, he's got a remarkably realistic expectation of what life with an infant is like.
